NCIS: Los Angeles‘ G. Callen and Sam Hanna (played by Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J) will say “aloha” to Hawaii Five-0— and then Steve McGarrett and Danny Williams (Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan) will return the favor — as part of a two-night crossover event for the CBS dramas, slated for May sweeps.

To kick things off, Five-0 showrunner Peter Lenkov says, “Chris and LL are going to come to Hawaii” — where it is revealed that Sam and McGarrett already know each other, having both been Navy SEALs. “There’s a bit of a history there,” Lenkov hints.

When the NCIS agents get wrapped up in what Lenkov calls a “really cool, big stakes” Five-0 case involving a biological weapon, “It ends up taking us to Los Angeles,” with Night 2 of the event unspooling on the Tuesday procedural.

“McGarrett and Danny end up in Los Angeles on our turf, on our terms,” NCIS: LA boss Shane Brennan tells TVLine, touting a “high octane” climax. But lest fans of one show or the either worry about missing half the action, Brennan notes, “You don’t have to watch both to love what’s going to happen.”

Given that NCIS: LA‘s Daniela Ruah crossed her Kensi Blye over to Five-0 earlier this TV season, Lenkov says, “It just seemed like a natural to continue the relationship.”

“It is the first time we are putting it out there for the people we care for,” said Peter Lenkov, the show’s executive producer. “I want them to love it. We are very proud and very excited to show it to people.”

The event at Queen’s Surf Beach starts with local entertainment and includes a red-carpet entrance by the principle stars: Alex O’Loughlin, Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim, Grace Park, Taryn Manning and Jean Smart. A welcome program starts at 7:30 p.m. and then the series pilot, which was shot here in March, will light up the screen.

CBS is expecting about 7,000 people at the venue, which in recent years has been a popular launch pad for TV series shot Hawaii.

Lenkov, who previously worked on “CSI: NY” and “24,” brought a fan’s perspective to the re-imagined series. Growing up in Montreal, Canada, he watched it regularly because it was his father’s favorite show. When he was first approached by CBS about a year ago, he felt he knew the series, but had questions, too.

“I wondered how I could add value to this franchise,” he said by telephone from Los Angeles, where he was refining scripts. “But the one thing was, you didn’t know who these characters were. You didn’t know their back stories.”

CBS will unveil it to the rest of the country a week later, on the 42nd anniversary of the original show’s network premiere. Until then, the Sunset on the Beach viewers will be the only ones to have seen it, besides reporters — and passengers on select Hawaiian Airlines flights.

Augie Tulba, the local comedian who performs as Augie T, landed a part as a helicopter pilot on episode three of the new series. The coming premiere has generated more excitement than he has seen in years, he said.

“It’s going to be an explosive show,” he said. “I’m hoping it is going to last for a long time. Guys like me need work.”

The real police will be at the premiere, including HPD’s top cop, Chief Louis Kealoha, a fan of the original series.
“I’m excited for it,” he said. “I saw those previews and it looks like it will be action oriented.”

Yet O’Loughlin bears a dubious nickname — that of show-killer.

Among the shows that he’s headlined are vampire drama “Moonlight” and the medical show “Three Rivers,” both of which debuted with high expectations but were pulled due to low viewership.

Which begs the question, why will the third time be the charm?

“Shows make actors, actors don’t make shows,”Steve Sternberg, longtime television research analyst at media buying agency Magna, told TheWrap. “‘Moonlight’ failing was not his fault. It was a well done show, but the premise [about vampires] was too narrow to draw the broad audience necessary to keep it on broadcast television. ‘Three Rivers’ was just not that good a show. But he’s a likable actor, and ‘Hawaii Five-O’ will have broader audience appeal. [SOURCE]

The “Moonlight” star has closed a deal to topline CBS’ “Hawaii Five-0″ remake.

He will play the role of the head of the Hawaii State Police portrayed by Jack Lord in the original series.

O’Loughlin, who was an early favorite for the part, joins recently cast “Lost” co-star Daniel Dae Kim, who will play Detective Chin Ho Kelly.

The new “Hawaii Five-0″ hails from hot feature writers and “Fringe” co-creators Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and “CSI: NY” executive producer/co-showrunner Peter Lenkov. CBS Studios is producing.

“Hawaii Five-0″ marks O’Loughlin’s third starring vehicle at CBS, following “Moonlight” and this season’s medical drama “Three Rivers.”

CBS brass certainly hope that the third time will be the charm for O’Loughlin the way it was for another network favorite, Simon Baker, who starred in CBS’ short-lived drama series “The Guardian” and “Smith” before headlining hit “The Mentalist.”

Will the third time be the charm for CBS and Alex O’Loughlin?

Undeterred by the back-to-back failures of Moonlight and Three Rivers, The Eye net is courting O’Loughlin to headline the freshly-greenlit remake of Hawaii Five-O, sources confirm.

“Talks are ongoing,” says the insider. “CBS really wants to do another series with him.”

The original Five-O — which starred Jack Lord as Det. Steve McGarrett — ran on CBS from 1968-1980. The update is being shepherded by Fringe writer-producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, as well as CSI: NY e.p. Peter Lenkov.

At press tour last week, CBS president Nina Tassler reiterated her strong desire to stay in business with O’Loughlin. “We love him,” she said, “and want him to stay around a long time.”
