Alex O’Loughlin to star in ‘Hawaii Five-0′!

Alex O’Loughlin is the new Detective Steve McGarrett.

The “Moonlight” star has closed a deal to topline CBS’ “Hawaii Five-0″ remake.

He will play the role of the head of the Hawaii State Police portrayed by Jack Lord in the original series.

O’Loughlin, who was an early favorite for the part, joins recently cast “Lost” co-star Daniel Dae Kim, who will play Detective Chin Ho Kelly.

The new “Hawaii Five-0″ hails from hot feature writers and “Fringe” co-creators Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci and “CSI: NY” executive producer/co-showrunner Peter Lenkov. CBS Studios is producing.

“Hawaii Five-0″ marks O’Loughlin’s third starring vehicle at CBS, following “Moonlight” and this season’s medical drama “Three Rivers.”

CBS brass certainly hope that the third time will be the charm for O’Loughlin the way it was for another network favorite, Simon Baker, who starred in CBS’ short-lived drama series “The Guardian” and “Smith” before headlining hit “The Mentalist.”

CBS eyeing Alex for Hawaii Five-O

Will the third time be the charm for CBS and Alex O’Loughlin?

Undeterred by the back-to-back failures of Moonlight and Three Rivers, The Eye net is courting O’Loughlin to headline the freshly-greenlit remake of Hawaii Five-O, sources confirm.

“Talks are ongoing,” says the insider. “CBS really wants to do another series with him.”

The original Five-O — which starred Jack Lord as Det. Steve McGarrett — ran on CBS from 1968-1980. The update is being shepherded by Fringe writer-producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, as well as CSI: NY e.p. Peter Lenkov.

At press tour last week, CBS president Nina Tassler reiterated her strong desire to stay in business with O’Loughlin. “We love him,” she said, “and want him to stay around a long time.”

“Three Rivers” officially canceled

Confirming what we knew last month, CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler said Pittsburgh-set medical drama “Three Rivers” is good and truly dead.

“We’ve all known each other long enough to say that when something is ‘on hiatus’ it’s code for something else,” said CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler, confirming the show’s cancellation.

As far as what went wrong, she acknowledged that it took the show too long to find its legs.

“Maybe we didn’t give enough character early on, maybe that was too late,” she said. “I also think Sunday night is a rough time to launch a new show. We have to assume some responsibility as far as programming it on Sunday night. I think it’s worth having another conversation about strategy on Sunday nights, which we certainly will.”

The Elephant Project

The Elephant Project is an organization to raise money and awareness for the Alzheimer’s Association. The elephant is the symbol of the project because there is a phrase that says, “elephants never forget,” and in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease, we are striving for those afflicted with it to “never forget.”

To raise money, and awareness, they have celebrities pose for a picture with an elephant beanie baby, which are then auctioned off in an Elephant Project auction package! Each package consists of an 8×10 photo of a celebrity posing with the elephant, a signed Elephant Project card by that celebrity, and a special elephant beanie baby! You can also follow them on Twitter here.

Thanks ellernet for the tip!

Alex O’Loughlin: What’s Next?

What’s to become of heartthrob Alex O’Loughlin now that CBS has mercifully pulled the plug on his organ-donor drama, Three Rivers? Says CBS president and CEO Leslie Moonves, “We still have his upcoming movie!”—referring to The Back-Up Plan, the feature film from the network’s new movie division, CBS Films. In the romantic comedy, Jennifer Lopez plays a baby-mama wannabe who meets Mr. Right (O’Loughlin) after becoming impregnated with the help of a sperm bank. That’s a bit of a drag, given that O’Loughlin’s character would’ve been one hot biological papa. “Alex spends almost half of the movie with his shirt off,” says Moonves, with a wide smile. “I mean, I’m a straight man, but even I, you know….” As for putting O’Loughlin back on the small screen, Moonves half-jokingly says, “I don’t know, should we bring Moonlighting back?” (O’Loughlin’s short-lived vampire drama was actually called Moonlight, but who are we to correct a network head?) In the end, Moonves offers some assurance that Australian native O’Loughlin won’t be shipped back to Oz any time soon. “He’s in the family,” Moonves says.
