THREE years ago, Aussie actor Alex O’Loughlin was forced to hock his stereo in order to survive the mean streets of LA.

Tomorrow night, Channel Nine will premiere the drama series O’Loughlin believes has rescued him from extensive unemployment and the ever-present prospect of debt.

While not yet a full blown Hollywood success story, O’Loughlin’s ghoulish turn as vampire Mick St John in Moonlight is the big career bite he needed.

His break still comes a cost, with long work hours preventing him from spending time with girlfriend Holly Valance.

“A show like this pulls all your time away from you,” O’Loughlin said.

“Usually I don’t see Holly all week but what do you do? I love my work and there are sacrifices.”

Sure beats being a bum.
